The winter coast is one of my favorite places to photograph. It’s quieter, a little moody, and everything feels softer once the crowds are gone. The sky stretches wide, the ocean slows down, and there’s room to just exist. That’s exactly why Tess and Matt’s engagement session felt so special.
We met on the beach on an overcast day, bundled up in layers, letting the wind do its thing. From the start, it felt less like we were creating something and more like we were stepping back into their story. They walked, talked, laughed, held onto each other when the cold crept in. Nothing forced. Nothing overly planned.
I love how the New England coastline looks in the winter—the muted colors, the way the sand and sky almost blend together, the calm that settles in. It always feels a little cinematic to me, in a quiet, understated way. Tess and Matt fit into that space so naturally. They weren’t performing for the camera, they were just being themselves, together.
Some of my favorite moments from this session happened in between. The way Matt would pull Tess in without thinking. The way she leaned back into him and smiled. Those are the moments I’m always watching for, because they’re the ones that feel the most authentic.
Spending time with them on the coast felt easy. Peaceful. Like everything slowed down just enough to notice the small things. This is why I love winter sessions, and why I’ll always have a place in my heart for the New England shoreline.
